Garden Design That Works for the Southern Highlands

When you live in the Southern Highlands, you know your garden needs to handle whatever our climate throws at it. Those beautiful crisp winter mornings? They often come with a decent frost. Our famously fertile soils? Sometimes they hold a bit too much water when the winter rains arrive.

We've been working with these conditions since 2018, and honestly, we love the challenge. There's something really satisfying about designing a garden that not only looks gorgeous but actually thrives in our unique spot up here in the mountains.

Moss Vale's been through quite a transformation lately – you've probably noticed all the great new cafes and creative businesses setting up shop. People are choosing to live here for the lifestyle, and they want gardens that reflect that choice. Not just pretty to look at, but spaces where you can actually enjoy being outdoors.

Why Moss Vale Families Keep Choosing Us

Being based right here in the Southern Highlands makes a real difference. When you call us about a project, we're not coming from Sydney or the coast – we're locals who understand what works in your neighbourhood.

Since we started in 2018, we've watched this town really come into its own. The mix of long-time farming families and new residents creating their dream properties means we get to work on everything from heritage cottage gardens to contemporary rural estates. It keeps things interesting!

Quick response times. When you need advice about storm damage or want to chat about a project, we can often drop by the same week. No waiting for someone to drive down from the city.

Local suppliers and trades. We work with local suppliers for soils and source plants from suppliers who understand our climate. This means better prices for you and support for the local economy.

We Cover the Whole Southern Highlands

From our Moss Vale base, we're perfectly positioned to work throughout the Southern Highlands. Most of our projects are within a comfortable drive, which means we can pop by for quick consultations or check how things are progressing without making it a big production.

Moss Vale FAQs

Why do some plants that grow well in Sydney struggle up here?

Great question! We're 672 metres higher than Sydney, which makes a bigger difference than you'd think. Those extra degrees of frost, the cooler summers, and the way morning sun hits differently all affect what thrives. We've learned which plants love our conditions and which ones to avoid – saves you the heartbreak of losing something you've invested in.

My neighbour says the soil here is amazing, but mine seems boggy in winter. What's going on?

You're both right! The Southern Highlands soil is generally fantastic – it's that rich basalt base that makes everything grow so well. But drainage can be tricky, especially on flatter blocks or where there's clay underneath. We see this a lot and know exactly how to fix it without breaking the bank.

Do I need council approval for landscaping work?

Depends what you're planning. For most garden beds and planting, no worries. But if you want to remove established trees, build retaining walls, or do major earthworks, then yes, Wingecarribee Shire will want to know about it. We deal with council regularly and can guide you through what needs approval and what doesn't.

When's the best time to start a big garden project?

Spring through early summer is ideal for construction work – ground conditions are good and access is easy. But here's the thing: design work can happen any time. Winter's actually perfect for planning because we can really see the bones of your property and you have time to think about what you want.

How do you handle our crazy weather swings?

Practice! We design with your worst-case scenarios in mind, not just the perfect days.
